Hi, and welcome to my page, The Blunt Knife Kitchen!
This body of work has been born from my years of experimental cooking. I started off not knowing how to cook at all. I am serious, my dad cooked everything in a microwave! Bless his cotton socks, and when I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING!
Roasts, bolognese, fish, steak and stir fry! By the time I moved to live with my mum, I was a hormonal teenager who would not in a million years listen to anything my mother said! Ha…..what would she know??!!!
It wasn’t until I met my partner Brian that I took a real interest in cooking, and that is only because his ex partner was the head chef at the Sheraton! Boy, did my competitive streak kick in, I had a lot to live up to, I must say!!!
So I set about reading new recipes and trying new foods. At the time, living in Noosa, I was exposed to lots of great cuisine, and I learnt to really enjoy food. I came to realise that you not only eat with your mouth, but with your eyes too. So food styling and photography is part and parcel with everything I do on this page.
I spent the next few years collecting The Super Food Ideas magazines, and I have not stopped! Now my tastes have evolved to be more robust, and my skills have improved. I now have the confidence to try my hand at most styles of cooking. I still collect magazines, having now branched out to Better Homes and Gardens, Delicious, Taste, Gourmet, Feast and many, many blogs. I am newly converted to Instagram too, and just love looking at all the creative foods people come up with. There really are some clever foodies out there!
When I look at how I cook, I tend to lean towards whole, simple foods. That does not mean bland! I use loads of herbs and spices to add depth to all my cooking. I would have to say my favourite go to spice would be Cumin. You will see that come up again and again in my cooking.
My favourite kitchen appliance is for sure my slow cooker! I use that baby all year round. Coming a close second is my Belini Thermo Cooker, or in other words, my pretend Thermomix! I use this all the time too.
Then there are my knives. You cannot enjoy cooking when you don’t have good knives! You may think you do, but I am here to tell you, you don’t know what you are missing out on till you try good knives! We are called The Blunt Knife Kitchen, because for most of my cooking years, I had cheap knives that never kept an edge. I ALWAYS had Blunt Knives in my Kithcen….hence our name!! That changed when my brother bought me a set of Furi knives for christmas, and I kid you not, a new lease on my kitchen life came over me! And I have been even more adventurous with my cooking!
I hope you get inspired to try new things when you visit us here at The Blunt Knife Kitchen!
